Ready to take your euros - Philip Berks,  from the Midway Truckstop

Cafes euro bonus for long-distance drivers

By Lisa Rowley

Lorry drivers from Europe do not have to worry about having the right money when they stop at an award-winning Shropshire truckstop for a rest and bite to eat.
The Midway Truckstop at Prees Heath south of Whitchurch is one of the few places in the county to accept euros. And cafe staff have got used to working out how much the the truckers have to pay in euros and giving them change in English currency.
Truckstop partner Phillip Berks said "Because we are a truckstop we get an awful lot of drivers dealing in Euros. We get French, Spanish and German.
"This just saves them worrying about English money. We have the rate on the wall. "They pay us in euro notes and we give them a  change back in English currency. We don't deal in the Euro small change yet."
He said they get up to eight lorry drivers a day paying for food and drink with euros. "Particularly most of the Irish drivers, they change a lot. Sometimes, it is once a day, sometimes eight times a day," he said.
Mr Berks, whose parents bought the truckstop over twenty years ago, said some of the lorry drivers were quite surprised when they saw they could use euros.
"Its a little bit more work for me but it helps them out," he said. Mr Berks said more and more people seemed to be using euros and bringing them back from holiday so it was quite handy they accepted them for payment.
The popular truckstop has won a number of awards and is now hoping to be successful iin the Parcelforce small business awards which it has entered.
